The ACG System helped keep this onsite clinic provider one step ahead of COVID-19

COVID-19 continues to make it harder for people to get the healthcare they need, whether urgent, preventative, or routine. It is especially tough for those folks who have chronic conditions that require continuous care. Providers and employers alike are concerned for their patients’ and employees’ health.  However, there is some good news out there: with Johns Hopkins’ ACG system to support clinical care, you can offer top-notch healthcare while saving healthcare dollars, even during a global pandemic. Sounds impossible, right? Well, we’ve got the proof: Marathon Health recently used the ACG System and saved millions.

Marathon Health provides on-site and near-site health clinics to non-profits, government employers, and other businesses around the U.S., allowing employees to visit Marathon Health clinics for preventative and routine care without really leaving the workplace. During the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Marathon Health tapped into the power of the ACG System to identify patients from their health clinics who were at the highest risk of complications if they were to catch COVID-19. The ACG System supported this effort by analyzing data about people’s gender, age, and chronic conditions (like diabetes, high blood pressure, or asthma) to pinpoint who was at highest risk.

The ACG System quickly identified over 260,000 people who were at risk, allowing Marathon Health to offer targeted evaluation, testing, and treatment to help actively manage these chronic conditions. The result? Fewer visits to urgent care, fewer trips to the ER, and fewer hospital stays, which translates to less healthcare spending overall. More importantly, the ACG System put Marathon Health in the driver’s seat, allowing them to proactively identify and address their COVID-19 challenges rather than simply reacting to them.

In the end, this strategy proved successful for providers, employers, and patients: each patient reached by Marathon Health’s efforts saved their employer an average of $2,000 in healthcare-related costs a year, which adds up to more than $22.5 million in savings. On top of that, these patients were happier and healthier, too, receiving quality, preventative care that matched their needs. This encouraging outcome was supported by population health analytics provided by the Johns Hopkins’ ACG System, a tool with a tradition of supporting healthcare providers with quick, action-oriented analytics that enable proactive healthcare for improving outcomes and quality of care for patients.
